Yesterday we celebrated my birthday! I baked a cake while Josh was putting the girls to bed then spent the morning of my birthday trying to micro-manage the icing of my cake. It is really hard to micro-manage a three year old and a not quite two year old who have been handed a cake and a bowl of icing. I ended up icing the cake myself, but not before the icing was thoroughly filled with cake crumbs, and a good portion of the cake needed to be rebuilt. I then gave each of the girls a bowl of sprinkles, a spoon and some candies and set them free to decorate.
It didn't take long before Elise started pushing the little candies as far into the cake as her little fingers could reach.
Tori began to copy her but with spoon in hand.
Then Elise started to copy Tori and the next thing I knew, they had dug a hole in the cake and dumped their candy and sprinkles into it.
And ta-da! Isn't it beautiful?
We went out for supper where someone else in the restaurant sneakily paid for our dinner! What a lovely birthday suprise! Then came home to blow out the candles and feast on the most beautiful of cakes to ever be decorated!
Tori was a little late in blowing out the candles but quickly learned what to do! Look at that face!
There is something wonderful about being a mom and having a birthday! These girls were just so thrilled to decorate my cake and help me blow out the candles! Sometimes it's hard to see past all the demands and urgent "needs" so often expressed with great and high pitched emotion. It's so wonderful to watch them do their best for someone else! And it's extra special when I get to be the one they are giving their best for!
