Today is day three of a very relaxed and inconsistent potty training attempt. There are a lot of theories out there on potty training and I'm sure they would all work wonderfully if I could actually devote every waking moment to the task. If I could hire a maid, chef and wet nurse to take care of all the other details of day to day life I'm sure that, even I, would be able to pay constant attention, and actually recognize that little glimmer that other parents claim to see in their child's eye when they need to go. It's not going too badly! We tried the potty training boot camp but I soon realized that I would get bored and frustrated about three hours in and that was when we would reach the tipping point. Everything would be going well until I stopped paying constant attention. The minute I tried to do some dishes or fold some laundry she would have an accident. As the day wore on I would get more tense and she would respond by flat out refusing to use the potty! The whining and screaming would make me angry and by the time josh came home from work Elise and I were both really really grumpy. So here's the method we are practicing: if I'm in a good mood we take off the diaper put on the underwear and go to the potty every 20 minutes. The minute I start to feel annoyed by little accidents or want to do somthing else we put the diaper back on until I'm in a better mind frame. It may take longer than three days but hey everyone is happy, meals are being prepared and the laundry and cleaning is not being completely ignored.
